Scholarship

                                     Local Scholarship Award Presented

The Santa Ynez Valley Jewish Community (SYVJC) is pleased to announce that it has awarded its annual $1,000. Scholarship Award to Brittany Nelson, a graduating senior from Santa Ynez Valley High School. In order to be considered for this award, graduating seniors from any Valley high schools may submit an essay responding to the question, “What Can My Generation Do to Improve Tolerance and Understanding Among All People?”, provide a letter of acceptance tp a college or university, maintain a 3.0 GPA or better average throughout their Junior and Senior years and provide two letters of recommendation.

Outgoing SYVJC President, Pamela Brown, said that Nelson impressed the scholarship committee with her stellar GPA, and her involvement in tennis, National Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation, People to People International, Interact (Youth Rotary), Junior Rifle Club and Library work. Ms. Brown said that it was definitely Nelson’s essay that clinched the scholarship decision for Nelson.

“While all the applications for this scholarship were outstanding, Brittany”s essay was both beautifully written and a poignant reminder that education is the key to all understanding”, said Pamela Brown, outgoing President of the SYVJC. Ms. Nelson wrote:

“The most effective and important way to improve the tolerance and understanding among people of today and tomorrow is education. When education is not present people sometimes form opinions based on other people’s thoughts or on false information. If these opinions are not corrected then they can last a lifetime...The best that we can do is to education people with the facts, tell them the truth, from there they will make their won opinions and we can only hope that they are kind ones. Tolerance and understanding incorporates more happiness and love into life while prejudice only creates hatred.”

Ms. Nelson will attend UC Davis in the fall.

The Seed, Sow, Supper farm dinner will be held in the Spring/Summer of 2010. Stay tuned for details.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

A new year of Sunday School begins on Sept. 20 at 9:30am at the Dunn Middle School. We’re very excited about curriculum for the year, and the growing staff that will be bringing Jewish learning and celebration to our children.

This year we welcome Esther Kaplan to our school as teacher of our “Kufim” (“Monkeys” in Hebrew) 3-5 year old class. We’re pleased to welcome back Sheliya Rosenbaum, who will be teaching our “Dubim” (Bears” - grades 1-3) and Jessica Shultz, who will be working with our “Arayot” (“Lions” - grades 4-6). We’re also delighted to announce the addition of Lily Khalili as Curriculum Coordinator. Lily will be providing detailed lesson plans and activities to assist our teachers in making every session an exciting one for our students. Lily will also be with us in our classrooms on those weeks when Rabbi Brown will not be with us.

This year’s curriculum will focus on “The Lifetime of A Jew”. We will begin with birth, and make our way through a Jewish lifetime, striving to understand the very human dimensions of those most significant moments, and exploring the ways in which Judaism celebrates and supports us at each milestone and transition point in life. The year will include interviews with individuals and couples who have recently experienced such a milestone, as well as re-enactments of Jewish ceremonials and celebrations (you won’t want to miss our “Wedding Day”!).

The year will also include Family Education Days, opportunities for parents, and members of the general community, to come learn with our youngsters.

Sunday School will meet on the first and third Sundays of each month (holidays excepted), except for January, when school will meet on the second and fourth Sundays.

For more information, call Relgious School chair Jill Goldworn, (805) 350-4344, Ilise Garvin, (805) 448-9172, or Rabbi Jerry Brown, (818) 517-4102.
DIVREI CHACHAMIM - Words of the Wise
The most beautiful thing a person can do is to forgive.
-Eleazar b. Judah, Yoma 23a (Talmud)

Why must conversions always come so late? Why do people always apologize to corpses?
-David Brin

The only thing permanent about behavior patterns is our belief that they are so.
-Moshe Feldenkrais

Being a Jew in the broadest definition means first, the accident of birth; secondly, the act of choice, choosing to remain Jewish despite the difficulties; thirdly, the act of cognition, learning to know the history and literature of his people so as to understand its soul and appreciate its place in the world; and finally, the act of transmission, transmitting to the next generation his heritage and the will to carry it on so that the Jewish people may not perish from the earth.
-Israel Goldstein
