About the Event

"I Cannot Be Bystander" is a feature-length documentary film that addresses the rising tide of hate in this country and inspires us to take action for a more inclusive society. Over the last several years, antisemitism and hate have stepped out of the shadows and into the everyday rhetoric of some of the most powerful figures in the U.S. and the world. The parallels are all too clear: the normalization of antisemitism and other forms of bigotry that we see today recalls the targeted hate that spread across pre-war Europe less than a century ago. Those who have survived the violence that hatred can lead to are ringing the alarm bells. This film weaves the recollections of Holocaust survivors through an exploration of where hate comes from, the impact hate has had on so many individuals and communities, and how we can safeguard one another and our democracy.
